How to calculate the cost of charging an electric car

The cost of charging an electric car is simple arithmetic once you know what goes into it:

Charging cost = kWh added to the battery × 1.1 (charging losses) × price per kWh

If your car has a 60 kWh usable battery and you charge it from empty to full, you need about 66 kWh from the wall. Multiply that by your tariff and you have the cost. Most drivers never charge from 0% to 100%, so a daily top-up from, say, 40% to 80% costs a proportionally smaller amount.

Why add about 10% for charging losses?

Not every kWh that leaves the socket ends up stored in the battery; some is lost as heat along the way. How much depends heavily on how you charge. Testing by the German motoring club ADAC, as reported by zecar, measured losses ranging from 5.1% on a wallbox to 24.2% on a household socket. A 10% allowance is a sensible middle figure for most home charging.

Don't count the losses twice

If you start from an efficiency figure rather than battery size, check where it comes from. US EPA consumption figures, quoted in kWh per 100 miles, are measured at the wall and already include charging losses. The 2026 Tesla Model 3 Standard RWD, for example, is rated at 24 kWh/100 miles, which is about 14.91 kWh per 100 km. Multiply that straight by your electricity price; adding another 10% would overstate the cost.

Electric car charging cost at home: full-charge examples

Home charging is almost always the cheapest option because you pay your normal household rate. The table below uses the latest published residential prices:

  • US: 18.34¢/kWh, the average residential price for June 2026 in the US Energy Information Administration's Electric Power Monthly, up from 17.47¢ a year earlier.
  • UK: 26.11p/kWh including 5% VAT, the Ofgem price cap unit rate for July–September 2026.
  • EU: €0.2896/kWh, the average household price for the second half of 2025 published by Eurostat.

What moves the home charging number

Tariff changes. In the UK, VAT on domestic energy is removed from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. The October–December 2026 cap is 26.32p/kWh with no VAT, according to Ofgem, which puts the Model 3 RWD full charge at about £17.37. The daily standing charge (57.19p in July–September, 54.83p in October–December) is paid whether you charge or not, so it doesn't belong in the per-charge cost.

EV tariffs. Zapmap puts the average UK EV tariff at 8.6p/kWh, which would cut the same full charge to roughly £5.68.

Where you live. Eurostat's EU average hides a wide spread: household electricity cost €40.42 per 100 kWh in Ireland, the highest, and €10.82 in Hungary, the lowest. That is roughly €26.68 against €7.14 to fill a Model 3 RWD.

Tiered pricing. DEWA's residential slabs rise from 23 fils to 28, 32 and 38 fils as monthly consumption passes 2,000, 4,000 and 6,000 kWh, so charging at home can push part of your bill into a dearer slab. In Oman, a primary residential account pays 14 baisa/kWh for the first 4,000 kWh, according to the Oman Observer; with the 5% VAT reported on bills, a full Model 3 RWD charge comes to about OMR 0.97.

In the UAE, the unified rates have applied at DEWA's EV Green Chargers since 30 September 2024 under Cabinet Decision 81/2024 and at UAEV chargers from January 2025, as Gulf News reported. Oman's Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology fees start on 1 October 2026, according to Muscat Daily.

To see what that means for a real session, take a Tesla Model 3 RWD charged from 10% to 80%. Allowing for losses, that is about 46.2 kWh billed. On a UAE public DC charger it costs about AED 58.21; on a UAE AC charger about AED 33.96. In Oman, the same session on a charger of 181 kW or more will cost about OMR 5.54 once fees begin.

EV charging cost vs petrol per 100 km

Comparing per full charge is useful, but comparing per kilometre shows what you actually save. The table uses the Tesla Model 3 RWD at 14.91 kWh/100 km (its EPA rating, losses already included). For petrol, it uses an illustrative 9.2 L/100 km, based on the EPA's 25.5 mpg average for model year 2024 non-electric vehicles; your own car may use more or less.

In US terms, the home figure is about 4.4 cents a mile against about 16.7 cents for the illustrative petrol car. In every market shown, a home-charged EV costs roughly a quarter of the petrol car or less per kilometre, and even rapid charging stays cheaper. Why fast charging costs more

The price gap between slow and fast charging shows up in every market with published rates. UK pay-as-you-go rapid charging averages 77p/kWh against 54p for slower public chargers. UAE public DC charging costs AED 1.20/kWh before VAT, against AED 0.70 on AC. Oman's new fees rise in steps with charger power, from 50 to 120 baisa/kWh.

You are paying for speed and convenience. High-power charging hardware and the grid connection behind it cost far more to install and run than a home wallbox, and operators price that in. At home you only pay your utility rate. Frequent rapid-charger users can often reduce the premium with a subscription: Ionity's pay-as-you-go price in Germany rose to up to €0.76/kWh from 1 July 2026 (from €0.69), while its subscriptions start from €0.41, electrive reported.

Cost to charge a Tesla

Teslas follow the same formula as any other EV. A Model 3 RWD with a 60.0 kWh usable battery needs about 66 kWh for a full charge, or $12.10 at the US average home rate. The Model 3 Long Range RWD has a 75.0 kWh usable battery, so a full home charge takes about 82.5 kWh, or roughly $15.13.

Per distance, the Model 3 Standard RWD (24 kWh/100 miles) costs about $4.40 per 100 miles at the US home average, and the 2026 Model Y Long Range AWD (27 kWh/100 miles) about $4.95. The Model Y Standard RWD is rated at 24–26 kWh/100 miles. Supercharger prices vary by site and time; third-party reports put US rates at roughly $0.30–0.60/kWh, so check the price at your chosen location. Charging an electric car in Qatar: what to check

The petrol side of the comparison is easy to pin down. QatarEnergy's September 2026 prices, as reported by The Peninsula, are QR 2.00 a litre for Premium, QR 2.10 for Super and QR 2.05 for diesel. On the illustrative 9.2 L/100 km basis, a petrol car costs about QR 18.45 per 100 km on Premium.

The electricity side needs one number from you. Published figures for Kahramaa's residential tariff don't agree with each other, so we are not quoting a single rate here. Check the current tariff on your Kahramaa bill or Kahramaa's calculator, then apply the formula:

  • Cost per 100 km: 14.91 kWh × your rate per kWh (Tesla Model 3 RWD, losses included).
  • Full charge: about 66 kWh × your rate for a Model 3 RWD, or about 90.8 kWh × your rate for a BYD Seal.
  • Break-even with petrol: electricity would have to cost about QR 1.24/kWh before a Model 3 RWD cost as much per 100 km as the illustrative petrol car on Premium.

  1. Charge at home whenever you can. Your household rate is almost always the cheapest kWh you can buy.
  2. Use a wallbox rather than a household socket. ADAC's tests, as reported by zecar, found losses of 5.1% on a wallbox against 24.2% on a household socket. EVS handles home charger installation.
  3. Look at EV tariffs where they exist. In the UK, Zapmap's average EV tariff of 8.6p/kWh is about a third of the standard price cap rate.
